Begin At The Beginning

First, congratulations, you are a business owner! It’s no small accomplishment. But, based on your score, there’s a good chance that your experience so far isn’t living up to your expectations. You have your own business, but is it the business of your dreams?

If your answer is no, that’s a good thing. It means you’ve given an honest assessment of your situation and you’re ready to change. With a score in this range, it’s best to start at the foundation of your business and work up from there. The foundation of any good business starts with Three Pillars. More foundational than even core values, these pillars shape your business and manifest in every aspect of it. It’s three simple words that establish everything you’re about. They should communicate three different ideas about your business: why customers and clients should trust you, what kind of quality they can expect from working with you, and what their experience with your business will be like.

This list will help you get started.

It’s about defining what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. So, before you can move forward with anything else, take your time with this. The importance can’t be overstated. It will help you clarify so much that is so important to your business. With the exact right words in place you will be able to develop detailed customer avatars and establish unequivocal codes of conduct both internally and externally.

As you mull this over through the next few weeks or months (yes it could take that long!) think through some of these questions:

  • Why do I do what I do?
  • What kind of experience am I trying to create for my customers?
  • Who is my ideal customer avatar? Who do I serve?
  • What comes to mind when customers think of my brand?
  • Why do my employees work for me?
  • What comes to mind when they think of the products and services?
  • What is the experience they create for customers?

Once you’re clear on these, there’s no limit to your growth potential and as you begin, remember that the entrepreneurial journey is worth it.
